Sabah was previously known as North Borneo and became a protectorate of the British Empire in 1888.
The administration was fully assumed by the crown colony government and became a crown colony from 1946 to the formation of Malaysia in 1963 when the name was reverted back to its original name, Sabah.
Sabah is now a Malaysian state occupying the northern part of the island of Borneo. It is famed for its 4095-meter-tall Mount Kinabalu, the country’s highest peak, crowned with distinctive granite spires. Sabah is also known for its beaches, rainforest, coral reefs and abundant wildlife, much of it within parks and reserves. Offshore, the Sipadan and Mabul Islands are noted diving destinations.
Sabah is also known as the “land below the wind” as the state lies below the typhoon belt of East Asia and never battered by any typhoons, except for several tropical storms.
Kota Kinabalu derives its name from Mount Kinabalu when it was changed from Jesselton in 1963 to reflect on the change of administration.
Kota Kinabalu is a modern city built after WW2. It is located along the seafront of South China Sea and protected by the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. An hour drive north of the city is the district of Tuaran where many beach resorts are located. The resorts are built over a large piece of seafront land with long sandy beaches fronting the South China Sea. You can choose to relax on the beach, the pool, long walks, join the sea sport or optional excursions from the resorts.
